Well, at 76 I would not even turn the computer on.
Sounds like either the temperature probe on the motherboard is giving an incorrect readout, or the TIM (Thermal Interface Material) between the heatsink and CPU has been incorrectly applied.
I have the same XP 3200+ Barton, and its famous for temperature problems.
