I have a Athlon II x4 640 cpu. As well as general pc use I also online game BF3, MW3 Crysis etc. When I boot up I have to option of unlocking the 4 cores. My question is, what is the reason and benefit of unlocking the cores.

I haven't overclocked the cpu as I am still in the process of seeing how it performs stock, which at the moment I'm quite happy with as I get 91fps in MW3 amd 60fps in BF3.
