Hmm, you could probably get away with 512MB of PC3200 memory. (Depending on what you are doing with the PC), and get a slightly faster graphics card.

I do have a FX 5600, and like it, but personaly for the same price the ATI equivilent will be faster.

It gets more blurry on the high end where ATI and nVidia end up about the same per price. (My high end card is a nVidia 5950, rather then ATI 9800)

Athlon XP 2500+ (the same processor as that 3000+, will overclock past 3200+ speeds, even though they're multiplier locked now)

Nforce2 or KT600 motherboard : Nforce2's are faster and much better overclockers. The KT600s are more stable, have more features, but are a bit slower and are mild overclockers. For nforce2 i recommend: Abit NF7-s or Epox 8rda3+; For the KT600, i recommend either the MSI KT6 delta or EPoX 8KRA2+

Buy a similarly priced ATI video card, like Wizard said.

For memory. Buy 2x 256Mb. If you need more, then 2x 512Mb. Good brands: Mushkin, TwinMos, Corsair, Kingston HyperX, Buffalo

More stable then a Nforce 2 motherboard? Please elaborate.

I don't know if I'd call the KT600 more stable than the nForce2 as the nForce2 has had quite some time to mature. The KT600 is relatively new. That's not to say that it's not stable, but I think it would be hard to make the case that it is more stable than the nForce2.

As to making recommendations, I'd need to more about what you want to do with your system. Are you planning on gaming a lot with it? Or will it mainly be a work/surfing rig?

The FX5600 might do ok now, but it's not going to cut it later on. The FX5200 is crap now and will be worse later. That leaves the 9800. You also might want to consider getting a 9700 Pro as the 9700 Pro and the 9800 perform very similarly(found a good review here' ">http://www.beyond3d.com/reviews/sapphire/9800/) and the 9700 Pro might be a bit cheaper.

If you're not looking to spend that much, but you want to be able to play future games at a decent level, then I'd say forego all of those options and look at the FX 5700 Ultra or the Radeon 9600 XT. Both of those cards will be able to play HL2 and Doom 3 comfortably. Of course, if you're lucky you might be able to find a 9800 non-Pro for $200, which is a sweet deal to say the least. I know Circuit City currently has a deal where you can get a 9800 for that price.

Thank you all for the advice.

its all about the price and future use... as long as one of those cards will be enough for the next year +, i will be happy.

The AMD 64 3000 just came out... and at a price which changes EVERYHTING.

The best bang/buck is still the XP2500 on an abit NF7-S or AN7. Plus it's a brilliant overclocker.

But the AMD64 3000 (2.0 Ghz) is now around the same price as the XP3000 (2.1 Ghz).

If an XP2500 is not fast enough for you, and you don't want to overclock, and in particular if you want Memory bandwidth:

Then AMD 64 3000 has to be the way to go.

And looking at the relative prices it's hard to see how to justify going higher.

I'm only holding off (for another month) because I want to see if the nForce 250 and SIS based chipset nobos turn up soon - plus maybe there will be some further price breaks after Christmas...

Go AMD.
