I'm having a hard time identifying which part number is the .18 micron. Most websites are apt to advertise that they have the .13, but no one is touting the older .18.
Can anyone tell me why I need the larger cast? or, even better, tell me what part number I need? is it AXDA2100BOX? or where to get it? Per that website, it looks like my safest bet is a 2100 .18. I can't make heads or tails of which column my MB falls into, b/c it's not an E, but it is almost 3 yrs old, so I'm fairly sure it's of the 'less compatible' older variety.

you wont find and NEW 0.18 processors anymore.

If you want to upgrade, you either need to buy 2nd hand or get a new motherboard.

It seems your motherboard can't tell what the newer processors are, using the name string, or they cant handle the different power requirements.

.18 Athlon XPs begin with AX, not AXDA. Palominos are kind of hard to find nowadays. You could get an Athlon Thunderbird, though.

I currently have a 1ghz Thunderbird...I was hoping to upgrade this machine to a faster CPU until I build a new system in a few months.

NewEgg still has Palomino 1900+ chips in stock.

Is the Palomino the same as XP? I thought they were different.

All Palominos are XPs, but not all XPs are Palominos.

Palominos, Thoroughbreds, and Bartons are all types of Athlon XP chips. Palomino was the last Athlon core made on 0.18 micron process.
