I have just installed an Athlon XP 2600+ on a Gigabyte GA 7N400 L1 mobo but the device manager tells me it is an Athlon 2000+ Why?
Also I wonder if someone could help me overclock my system a bit. Should I put any more fans? I only have the cpu fan and the system fan.

this is because your FSB is running at 133MHz(133x12.5=1.66GHz=AXP2000+ speed)...the default FSB for your CPU is 166MHz(166x12.5=2.08GHz).
Set your FSB to 166MHz in BIOS and your chip will run at its rated speed

as for OCin...what HSF are you using? a retail/boxed one?
generally, you should lower your multiplier while slowly(1MHz steps) raising your FSB until it gets unstable...then try a higher multi with the highest stable FSB.
If stability issues occur, you can *slightly*(by like 0.025 or 0.05V) raise Vcore and see if it gets more stable.
Make sure you closely watch your CPU-temps when OCin...keep it below 60°C(load) for everyday use...

Thanx Hellraiser. I have a boxed HSF. But my mobo does not allow 1Mhz stepping,
only by percentage(5%,10% etc).Same for Vcore. You Think that I should add fans to my system or completely change my cooling system? You see I am new to Athlon,I had Intel but I was not very pleased.

Just watch carefully your temps and if are Fine (below 45 - 50C) then try to OC....

if you're going to try overclocking, definitely change your heatsink to something a little more substantial. Thermaltake's HSFs are good, Thermalright's SLK-800u/900u HSF are incredible, etc. etc.

cheers,

dave

well, a small bit of OCin is possible even with a stock HSF...but the performance gain vs. the added heat wouldn't really be worth it.
I concur with dave, you should get a better HSF. Thermaltake makes good Heatsinks at a reasonable price, while Thermalright, although they may be pretty expen$ive makes some of the best performing Heatsinks for Socket A, IMHO - i love my SLK900U
