Another item i read stated the Athlon XP's were originally Palomino architecture and then became Thoroughbred/Thoroughfire architecture.

Anyway's I'm trying to figure out the gain in speed in upgrading an old computer from K6-2 (aka K6-3D) 550Mhz to this Athlon XP 1700 (1.47 Ghz).

Thanks for any guidance...too many marketing names used, it's difficult to remember what's what and i seem to recall that it's not just the clock-speed, but the architecture from a Pentium 2 (K6-2) to an Athlon (Pentium ___?) is also a factor.

There are 2 AMD Athlon XP 1700+ CPUs one is a Palomino (AX1700DMT3C) and the other is a Thoroughbred (AXDA1700DUT3C) they are both 1467mhz

The speed increase is going to be major if they are both running XP.

There is no way that you can drop a socket 462 processor into an old socket 7 (k6-2 550mhz) motherboard if that is what you are referring to

oh, i used the word "upgrade" in the context of purchasing a used computer which has the XP 1700+ processor (vs putting that processor onto an older board).

for about $40 more, i could a different computer altogether with (still single core), 2.4GHz pentium4 CPU .

You should also consider type&amount of RAM, type of VGA card and size&age of harddisk for those systems as well, it may be clear advantage for one of them(XP1700+ vs P4 2.4GHz).
