I am about to buy a AMD Processor, but having trouble understanding how the clock speeds vary so much.

My question is that an AMD Athlon™ XP Processor 2500+'s actual clock speed is only 1.83GHz while an AMD Athlon™ XP Processor 2400+'s actual clock speed is 2.0GHz and is cheaper.

How does AMD come up with the Processor value speeds, such as 2500+, 2400+ etc.

Does that mean that a AMD Athlon™ XP Processor 2500 is just as fast, or faster than a Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.5Ghz even if the clock speed is slower?

-Thanks for answering the stupid question

Right. The 2500+ is faster than the 2400+ because its FSB (front side bus) speed is higher, and it has more L2 cache. They're pretty close in performance, though, as the names would indicate.

Also, please don't cross-post...

the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ is actually faster than a XP 2400+ the core clock speeds dont matter when you come to AMD really the 2400+ is as a P4 2.4GHz and a XP 2500+ is as a P4 2.5GHz with higher FSB 333MHz than a 2400+ with 266MHz FSB

Does that mean that a AMD Athlon™ XP Processor 2500 is just as fast, or faster than a Intel Pentium 4 Processor 2.5Ghz even if the clock speed is slower?

(The AMD Athlon XP 2500+ will perform as fast as a P4 2.5GHz or as well more than).

I also got a question, if I have a 2500 barton and I overclocked it to like 2.5 ghz from 1.83, would I be running as fast as a 3.0 ghz pentium due to adding 500 mhz to it?

Hmm, thats hard to say.. like i said the clockspeed isnt the real affect of the cpu, but! you would notice a huge difference with it that far OC'd make sure you have the right cooling, OCin 500MHz is alot, i OC'd mine buy bumpin my FSB from 266 to 333 and it runs as a 3000+ now correct? at 2.16GHz if you can jump ur FSB speed. i think the 2500+ is already 333, try goin 400MHz and u will be close to 3ghz

another thing, my friend has a 2500+ and he OC'd it to a 3200+ just bumped fsb to 400mhz from 333 and it should perform as a 3200+ it automaticly changed cpu type to 3200+ in dxdiag and other amd things.. so i would think it would be

Depends, FrozenSteel. I think you'd easily outclass a P4 3.06B, but I'm not so sure about beating a P4 3.0C. The XP line was never meant to compete with the FSB800 processors, after all... that's what the Athlon 64s are for.
