My friend is having problems with his computer. Whenever he tries to play a DVD he gets this error message -

"Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer."

If anyone can help out it'd be appreciative.

For anyone who is wondering, here are his specs:

Athlon XP 1700+
512mb SD-RAM
80GB IDE HDD
DVD/CD Reader
CD-RW Burner

It's a Compaq Pressario 5420us

Well let me explain what this error message means first then I will offer a solution.

The error 'Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer' is telling you that it can not play the dvd as it does not have the write software coder to decode the DVD.

Solution: well most dvds, if you go into my computer, explore the disc itself, will have a player included, you might just want to use that one. One example is the Interactive player. Another idea you may want to recommend is that he gets the free player from www.divx.com, or in the options Microsoft also allows you to check a box to allow it download decoders.

I would actually do the divx fist. It installs a player and a decoder, so if he doesnt like the divx he could use the wmp. DIVX download link' ">http://www.divx.com/divx/download/

if he's using Windows Media Player 10 it should already have decoders installed with it,. when i bought my benq drive i just popped it in, put in a dvd and it worked like that. no extra software installs or downloads, but i had WMP10 so maybe if he doesnt have it, get him to download it.
