I just thought I would put a post up about the troubles I had with my CPU.
Previously I had an xp 2200 t-bred and my computer was totally stable.
In september 2004 I "upgraded" to a Barton XP 3000+ and got new DDR400 memory from scan.co.uk
Asus A7N8X mobo PCB 1.04 bios 1008
Well the system was never stable again. I ran windows memory diagnostic and got loads of errors (all tests). I returned the RAM to scan and they agreed it was faulty.
I put up with the PC for ages it would run stable at about 150 fsb (should have been 200), I was turning down the fsb until "Windows memory diagnostic" would pass. It failed WMATS+ above 150 fsb every time with this cpu.
Anyway I borrowed a Barton 2500+ from a friend, and guess what, my system would run stable at 200 x 10.5 = 2100Mhz overclocked effectively the same settings as the XP 3000+. WMATS+ in windows memory diagnostic no longer failed.
Eventually I have a new CPU from scan another xp 3000+, multiplier unlocked and it running nice and stable at 2300Mhz. WMATS+ now passes.
A word of warning about scan.co.uk I had to threaten legal action to get another chip they insisted it was impossible for a cpu to cause windows memory diagnostic to fail. Well they are proved wrong now. They shipped me faulty memory and a faulty cpu! Not only that their technical knowledge is zero, they say an xp 3000+ runs at 2.17GHz.
when WMATS+ failed at lots of adresses ending in 0584 (hex) memory contains 0x8080C080 it should contain 0x80808080
Anyone any ideas at what was wrong with the CPU? the cache?
