First of all, hi. I inherited about 1/3 of a desktop three days ago and have since got it up and running. I am having serious problems with the processor however. I have mbm5 running and it shows and idle temp of 111 degrees F, however when I put the cpu under any stress, It heats up to the 130's and shuts itself down. The guy who had it before me had heat issues, he had to run an open case with a box fan in it to keep it going. The cpu fan was out when I got it, so I bought a used fan and heatsink off of another athlon and put it on. It had dry thermal paste on it, I got most of it off and applied new but still had heat probs. The heatsink came off of a newer athlon and is wider and thicker than the old one. If anybody knows what's going on here I would greatly appreciate their help...

Athlon xp 2000+ Antec 430 psu soyo dragon ultra kt333 mobo 3.2gb hd--scrap, ordering 80gb ati rage 128 graphics card--scrap, waiting on geforce 5700le to get here 256mb RAM @266mhz--borrowed waiting on 512 stick of pc-2700
I am currently running an open case with 2 antec fans (induction). Also, if I have the heater on in my room (college student) it heats up quick. It has been on for about 20 min. and is @ 93 case and 125 cpu. It's about 6feet from the heat unit around a corner.
What is "dropping the multiplier"? I'm not that experienced in build/repair of computers...
The mobo bus is @ 133mhz according to bios, however I have read that the mobo would support 266mhz fsb. I have the option to drop it to 100mhz but no higher than 133...
How do I set the bus speed on the cpu? Once again, not that experienced. The boot screen shows it to be running @ 1.67ghz, normal for this cpu. Could that be wrong?

You are running at the correct bus speed and the multiplier is set properly. (133*12.5=1662MHz) 133 bus speed at double data rate = 266
Your power supply may be an issue, but I would doubt it. The only thing I could suggest is to remove your heatsink and make sure there is not to much thermal grease as well as not to little
