I have the said cpu, and idling here, it is at 55 degrees according to mbm and my bios. It has run like this since it was installed(maybe 6 months ago). I'm using the retail HS and fan that came with the cpu. The paste was already on the HS, I just had to put the HS on the cpu and clamp it. Is this an ok temp for that cpu? Should I take the hs off and apply new compound? I don't have arctic silver but I do have some other stuff.
That temperature does seem high to me. Try reapplying some CPU grease, see if it helps. If it does not it could just be that that series of CPU came with really poor CPU HSF's. I know that the stock cooling for my Athlon XP 2800+ was crap. It used to have a load temp of 65C. If reapplying the grease does not help bring down the temperature, strongly consider buying a new HSF. If you reapply, don't forget to wipe off the current grease beforehand.

Thanks, a new heatsink sounds good, but I don't have the funds for it right now.
I attempted to remove the heatsink, but it gave me a hard time so I took it as a sign to leave it alone for now. I did take off the fan and cleaned the heatsink. My temp is now at 51 as I'm typing this, just the browser open. Better than the 55 I was used to seeing. ooo..just dropped to 50
I'm not seeing any stability problems, so I probly shouldn't worry
