Well like you said, usually this is bad news but a tiny chip may not cause a problem. You'd sure want to throw every benchmark at it that stresses the CPU and especially the L2 cache because if it's damaged the processor could appear to be all right until the full 512K is tested.
Guess it depends on what the price was and if you want to take a chance. You could post a picture here and have us take a look.
