I have an Athlon XP 3200+ on an ASUS A7N8X-E mobo. Never had any problems with the cpu before. Well, for some dumb reason I decided to download the processor driver (release August 2007) from windows update the other day. That's the ONLY thing I did. After reboot, the computer runs exceedingly slow. The cpu speed and temps all register correctly; scan disk was normal; antivirus shows all clean; memtest was fine, no unknown processes, no cpu usage at idle (under task manager)...I can't find anything wrong, but now the computer acts like an old 8088 trying to run 3DMark06.
I tried rolling back drivers/restore point but for some reason it won't go through.

Any ideas why this might happen and how I can get this driver fixed/removed?

lol *****, sounds like fun. No clue, you running Vista? It keeps saying my athlon xp is a Duron even tho i took the duron out of that system like 5 months ago and reinstalled windows twice haha! Processor drivers suck. Try finding an older processor driver? You could have downloaded a wrong one by mistake or something or who the ***** knows. ***** maybe the new driver enabled DEP protection or some crap like that that slowed it down or maybe its using some form of power management and downclocking it. see what cpu-z says.

I'm running XP. Problem is, I KNEW better than to download that crap...if it ain't broke dont fix it. I found some other info here at AMD forums that I will look into tonight. I think you are right though...when I look up old athlon drivers at AMD it directs me to Athlon 64 everytime. I hope Microsnot didn't have the 64 bit driver on that update (of course it gives no details whatsoever as to what the driver was). The cpu will show 0-2% usage at idle (no background processes), but as soon as I launch ANY program or game, it's unbearably slow, like running through molasses.

edit: Also, I ran AMD cpu ID, and everything shows normal. No changes (that I can see) in BIOS either...normal temps (39 deg C) and Speed (2.2 GHz)

It's too bad driver cleaner cant delete processor drivers like it does grapics and chipset ones lol. (or can it? idk)

You *may* be able to do something crazy like boot in safe mode, uninstall the cpu in device manager and then dont restart and search for the files that is the driver and delete them, and then have it reinstall default ones when u next restart.. hmm..

Socket A cpu drivers are not required for windows xp. The ones you've installed are for more recent cpus.

I too installed the Windows Update AMD processer driver update dated August 2007.

There were not real details as to what this was. I now suspect this update had cuased an issue with on of the applications I am running, and for a sanity check would like to roll this change back.

Does anyone have any advice on the best way to do this (without having to reformat )?

Well, I finally had to do a 'repair' install of XP and it took care of the problem. AMD tech support never wrote back. I guess I learned my lesson!
