Make sure you have the latest hp/compaq bios for your system before swapping.

Athlon 64 S939 cpus cannot be found new anymore, but used at e.g. ebay.

sempron 3200+ Manila 1,8GHz, the same as palermo xcept level2 Cache is 128KB, and is AM2(940) socket , ASUS M2A-VM HDMI mobo, 2GB DDR2 Kingston win XP SP3,
I want to upgrade, but the only processors, I could find were: Sempron 140 2,7GHz, and 145 2,8GHz, both specified as AM3 socket.
I hear that AM3 is backwards compatible with AM2 and AM2+, but is it true that HT only goes as much as 800M... instead of 2000 even if I upgrade first to the latest bios 5010, I think...
Is it a real upgrade, or not...

sind, here is the CPU support list for your motherboard.

It will be a noticeable improvement if you go with an Athlon II or Phenom II processor,
even a 2.7GHz Sempron 140 should make a difference to a Manila core at 1.8GHz.

As usual, do use the benefit of dual channel RAM also, e.g a pair of equal RAM sticks to enable dual channel ram operation.

Hello, I'm new here and need some help. A a friend just closed his shop and I acquired an "E-Machine with Windows 7 64 bit, a AMD Athlon II 160u processor and 2 gig of memory. I'm upgrading this new machine and have already replaced the 230 W power supply with a 500W unit. I have 2 gig of memory on the way which when installed will give me 4 gig total. My big problem what AMD processor will fit the AM2 socket? This machine is less than 11 months old and yet it has a AM2 socket with a Athlon II 160u in it. I want to run a 3.0 Gig or higher processor. Which one will work and is the pin configuration 938 or 940? When this is done I'll get a ATI video card as the computer came with a Blur-Ray burner and I like good games.

Can someone suggest a replacement upgrade for the Athlon II 160U that will work on my board. The board is a generic ASUS MA061l-D3 ATX.
