I WANT TO upgrade my AMD sempron 2500+ to the fastest cpu that will fit in a ASUS A7V880 MOTHERBOARD

DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHERE I CAN FIND THIS INFO ON MY UPGRADE AND IF IT IS WORTH DOING SO OR JUST BUYING A WHOLE DIFFERENT MOTHERBOARD AND CPU

MY SPEED IS 1.75GHZ I WANT TO GET UP TO AT LEAST 2.4 - 2.6 IF POSSIBLE WITHOUT OVERCLOCKING OR WOULD IT BE MORE PRACTICAL TO GO AHEAD WITH OVERCLOCKING AND SPEND MONEY ON A BETTER COOLING SYSTEM INSTEAD OF A DIFFERENT CPU ??

WELL HOPEFULLY THIS REACHES SOMEONE WHO CAN GIVE AN ANSWER AND OPINION ON THIS MATTER IM NEW TO ALL THIS FORUM /BLOG Ect..

Not worth to spend any more on that, IMO.

Best you can do is increase the vcore a couple of notches in BIOS, then set the bus clock to 200MHz and the RAM to run 1:1 with it.
(ie CPU and RAM will run at 400MHz DDR). Then, if you have two sticks of identical RAM, set them up in Dual Channel config in the RAM slots.

As go_for says the best you're likely to get is 2.1 GHz (10,5x200) which is about equivalent to an Intel P4 2.8 GHz.

Your sempron is Socket 462, you wont find any shops still selling aftermarket coolers for it because its 4 generations old.
Also its not worth spending any money on a cooler because the most you could overclock that is probably 2.1ghz which wont be noticeable.

Save a bit more and do a system overhaul. Buy a new AM3 motherboard, CPU and ram.
You can transfer your old harddrives to the new one.
You will need at least $200 to build a decent AM3 dualcore.
I sold my dad's old sempron 2500+ for $35 a few weeks ago, that should give you an idea on how much to sell your pc.
