I may be able to get a 2400+ cheap soon as a mate of mine may be upgrading to a 2800+ or something. he whats to be able to play Hl2
What are the 2400+ ones like to overclock ? do they overclock well?
If I do get the 2400+ off him I would only be makeing a system to mess around with overclocking etc.

I am not sure if I should advise him to get anything else cpu wise though as he would be better to just buy a new 64 biter rig, but he's tight mony wise and would not spend that much, he will be wanting to be able to play doom 3 and HL2 most likely thinks at high quality settings to .

What should I tell him to do. up the ram to 512 and at least a ati 9600xt that should cope ok shouldn't it ?

with the newest bios that mobo he has can take up to a Sempron 3000+
how much of a difference would he see with it and the above upgrades? and maybe he might even spend a bit more and get 9800pro (maybe)

Any other suggestions ?? how would the 2400+ go with either a 9600xt or 9800pro ?? and 512mg ram and what do you think of that mobo he has?

the lack of RAM, and video card, would be a far bigger bottleneck to him playing Doom III than the CPU.

The 2400+s (2GHz) can often be overclocked up to 2.4GHz, but it'd produce alot of heat.

In my opinion, XP 2400+ is the best XP CPU for OC.

The bad thing in that system is not the CPU but that obsolete mx 440 128mg. That must be changed. (But not with fx 5200 for God's sake !.

So, he's got to get a decent video card like the 9600 Pro or Fx 5700U ( I recommand the 9600Pro from Gigabyte) and add another 256MB RAM to that sys.
That will do for decent performance in doom 3 and HL2.
