Hi I have a question are there going to be any Semprons for us using systems that go no higher than 266 in CPU bus speed and when are the Athlon XP's going to be fazed out
If you BIOS let you configure manually the Processor parameters (Voltage, FSB and Multiplier), is possible that you can use that Processor without troubles at all (Less FSB but higher Multiplier to compensate). Never tested it, but I'm sure that it is possible.

Thank You It's socket A right, so it should work, just at a lower speed with any of those chipsets that only support 266MHz bus speeds..
Just like all the other socket A cpu's...Semprons aren't special, they are just Thoroughbred B cpu's that can run at the higher 2x166 (333) bus speeds.

Semprons have there own memory controller and a Hyper transport link for a FSB right? Semprons are A64s with out the 64 - bit extentions, not to mention less L2 cache. A64s are AXPs with 64-bit extentions and more cache with the mem controller integrated and the added Hyper Transport FSB. So you can say a Sempron is a AXP outfitted to run on a A64 motherboard. So why would AMD need make Semprons for AXP boards when the sempron essentialy is a AXP?
But the big question is why get a Sempron when A64's are affordable and have better performance? Is the price that good? Or is it to hold you off untill amd releases faster A64 processors?
I think AMd sales of A64 CPUs are so great that AMD feels they can phase out AXPs but not totally bury it. The AXP is now reborn as Sempron. This means Intels Celeron D processors don't stand a chance, [content edited] I bet high speed Semprons can out perform sub 3Ghz Pentium 4's.
There are two types of Sempron. The one based in K7 Architecture (Either a Thoroughbred B or Thorton Core (Barton with 256 KB Cache Lv 2 disabled)), and the one based in K8 Architecture (Paris (Newcastle with 256 KB Cache Lv 2 and 64 Bits Instructions disabled)). The only K8 based Sempron is the Sempron 3100+, that one have the Integrated Memory Controller and Hyper Transport (These two are a must need in K8 Architecture, incluiding Athlons 64 and Opterons). Athlons 64 are K8, they use a architecture completely diferent of the one that K7 uses (Incluiding Athlon, Athlon XP and Duron). They're not just a 64 Bits version of the Athlon XP, they're a completely diferent one...
