Oh, my friend wants to sell me his Gigabyte GA7VM400M-R2. (RZ or R2?)
He said that this board won't support Semprons. After looking at the recommendations, this board actually support them. Should I update the BIOS, or should I need a special cooling system to accomodate the Sempron needs on a non-Sempron board? Please advise. Thanks.

If you go to the gigabyte website you can find the bios update for Semprons.
You may not even need to update the bios. It should work ok with an older bios but may just be recognized as an athlon XP
You shouldn't need to change the heat sink, just make sure you have some decent thermal paste between it and the processor core.

Look at the bios revision history, not the cpu support table...they rarely update the table...

All GA7VM400M boards, rev 1.x, 2.x etc support Semprons...since they are really reconfigured Athlons...no other changes..

Version FC, 2004/8/9, Added AMD Sempron CPU support ....

Okay, I'll do the upgrading to Sempron 2200+. Well, I hate to ask that, but is Sempron optimized for games or just light work? What about older games like HL, SoF and Red Alert II? Does it run smoothly?

P.S: Must I use thermal paste for this thing? Is the thermal paste available when you buy the processor box? Please advise.

A Sempron is just another CPU...The Sempron is targeted toward people who will purchase a Celeron D system...so consider a Sempron 2200 comparable to a Celeron-D 2.2GHz...

There is a thermal pad included with the retail box.
