Hello!

I have an A7V133 ASUS motherboard with an athlon xp 1000.

The motherboard (FSB 266 MHz and SDRAM PC133) use a VIA VT8363A (VIA APOLLO KT133A) northbridge and is suppose to run amd athlon xp up to 2000+.

Is there any sempron I can use to upgrade my desktop?

Bye.

In short, no. The Sempron uses a 333 MHz FSB. If you get a Sempron, then it will underclock itself to a 266 MHz FSB, or, it will not be recognized at all.

Hi jcdole!

As you can see in my sign I have almost the same board as you. I have to agree with AMD808. Either you are lucky to find any CPu working on that board today or you just have to change almost everything to get running a Sempron skt A or a skt 754 (somewhere in this forum there are people claiming it Sempron 3100+ for skt 754 to be faster then the fastest of skt A Athlon XP 3200+).

The most common RAM are DDRs instead of PC133 today and mobo prices are cheap for skt A if you just want to get an skt A Sempron up and running.

Skt 754 are on its way out of market very soon. But it could be a cheap start to get access to Athlon 64 (64-bits CPU which can run 32-bit, that's today software). Sempron for this socket will just work in pure 32-bit and not for 64-bit (yet!!.

So here are your choices! Keep what you have, take a chance on Sempron on your old mobo or just upgrade everything.

Your board should be OK up to a 2600+ Athlon XP (266 MHz FSB). The only problem with that is they are increasingly hard to find, and your board may not recognize it properly because of it being a Thoroughbred core. Your board has clearance for Palomino XP's, but a BIOS update may be needed for the Thoroughbred. Best bet for a maximum upgrade would be a 2000+ to 2400+.

I would actually consider upgrading your system to an A64 platform.

Yes,A 3100 Sempron is faster than a 3200barton and can be overclocked to 2.4ghz+ and compete with A64 3400's on an NF3-250 or K8T800pro MB.

Socket A cpu's will be phased out soon(this year) and the value processors will be SKT 754 Semprons.

When you can get quality NF3 skt 754 boards for under £50 and 3100's for £60,what's the point of getting skt A?

The skt 754 A64's are about 3-5% slower than skt939 cpu's but are a whole lot cheaper.
SKT 754 3400(2.4ghz.512L2) <£150
SKT 939 3800(2.4ghz,512L2) >£425

SKT 754 NF3-250 MB <£50

SKT 939 NF4 >£70

There's a pretty good reason for 754 £££££££

ps,you can get brand new K8T800 skt 754 mobo's for £32.99 on Ebay.
