The difference is that the skt A sempron 3000 has 512mb L2 cache 333mhz FSB
xp2400 has 256mb L2 cache 266mhz FSB
Both cpu's run @ 2ghz but the Sempron is the better cpu due to the extra cache and higher FSB

They should replace your cpu...due to the higher fsb on the sempron instructions are passed quicker etc therefore the system performs better.
Sempron 3000+ skt a is basically an xp2600+ Barton core but just that little bit faster.

Sempron 2400+:
Speed: 1666 MHz
L2 cache: 256Kb
Core: Thoroughbred B

Sempron 3000+:
Speed: 2000 MHz
L2 cache: 512Kb
Core: Barton

The 3000+ would be better. I'd check the settings in the BIOS before assuming you got the wrong processor. You can also download a CPU ID program like cpuz

I assumed it was a sempron, but maybe you're right, the poster wasn't specific... Hence my "get cpuz" comment.
