I have both of these processors available to place into a secondary machine. I am pairing them with an FX5200 and 512MB of memory. I don't plan to run anything real heavy duty on the machine, but which processor will offer the best perfomance overall?

What motherboard? What speed memory (pcxxxx)?

Not much in it, but the sempron runs at 166MHz stock. (9x166~1500MHz).

The xp1800 runs at 11.5x133~1533MHz. So slighty faster, but a lower bus speed.

Certainly running at 166 gives better system peformance than 133.

Some old Asrock (K7VM3), memory is DDR400 so no worries there. The problem was that the 2200 was running at 1200 MHZ. I guess I need to manually set the bus speed to 166. hehe.

I'd choose the Sempron 2200+ processor. True, the Athlon has a 33 MHz advantage, but it is the system bus that matters, so I am pretty sure the Sempron will be slightly faster.

The board supports the sempron, so yes, go for that, unless the xp1800 is a low voltage Thoroughbred B which will probably run at 166 anyway.

In case you're interested, the sempron can be modded to run at 11x166 with the lower multipliers unlocked. Your board supports changing multiplier on-the-fly in windows.

A mate managed a fairly good overclock on an XP 1800+ from default 1.533Ghz to 1.8Ghz (effectively a 2200+ XP) so might be worth trying each one to see how well they OC. As long as you take things steady and test thoroughly each time you increase the frequency a little bit, you should be fine. Always risky I know, but it's probably easier to increase bus speed of motherboard (for XP OC) rather than modding the multiplier (for Sempron OC). Just my IMO...
