Ok, I thought I had problems over memory. THats sorted.
I updated to latest bios v.1007.
When I go through all bios options, IDE first, etc, when I reboot,my IDE drive is not detected (boot disk failure). I have tried installing windows xp 4 times but it just reboots all the time, going through the same install procedure.
When I autodetect my hard drive in the bios, it shows up Ok. However, when I reboot, it has gone again.

Please, help.

Are the hard drive jumpers set to their appropriate settings?

As AMD808 says m8 Check the back of Hard Drive and make sure the little jumper (shorts 2 pins) is in master and not slave.
and is the ribbon of good quality and inserted into ide1 socket?

Hi, thanks for reply.
JUmpers settings are correct, unless western digital drives are different. One single master 80 gig drive.

History behind this is that the machine's power supply sparked and packed in. I replaced it, but board would not fire up. I purchased new asus A7v600-x as a replacement, using sempron 2.6 processor. All is Ok except when I try to re install windows again.
It is not detecting my hard drive during boot process.

Hi again m8.

I dont know how experienced you are with computers, But if you were not very experienced then i would probably ask you to check that your bios is set to boot from cdrom......F10 to save changes and exit(making sure the O.P system disc you bought was correctly inserted in the cdrom drive) .....Windows should now go through all the setup procedure and ask you to set up partitions and format (remember and delete the old partition first) using the NTFS system, and dont use the quick format, after a while you get asked to input certain things before the setup finally finishes and reboots.
This is where alot of people go wrong m8!! because the bios is still set to boot from cdrom and usually the windows disc is still in the cdrom drive.
And when the computer is restarting it says PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD, But if a key is pressed the install procedure will restart.

I am only saying this because like i said before, I dont know how experienced you are, and it can be easily done (ok i have done it...Happy now lol )

Regards

JJ

Jammy Johnny

Thanks for the reply.
Up until now I thought I was a bit more experienced than most. This is a new Motherboard to me( I'm still thinking I should not be talking about this problem here as its more for processors)

WEll, I'll inserted an old 6.4 gig hard drive I had, and it took the windows install OK.
I changed the jumpers to other configurations on the 80 gig hard drive( Western Digital). Still not luck.
Everything runs on the install, copying files across to hard drive, but when it boots up again it cannot find the IDE Drive.

Latest message is NTLDR is missing. Could the hard drive have been damaged?

Give this a try m8
We will get there eventually lol, Just takes time

JJ

1. Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
3. Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:
copy ntdetect.com c:

7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

You are keen. However, time is not on my side.Uk based.

web search' ">http://www.experts-exchange.co.../WinXP/Q_21085504.html
I have followed this link to see if this works. I have booted with a floppy and used fdisk to delete all partitions. There was a non dos partition, which could have been there from the computer supplier. I'm on a new install at the moment. If it doesn't work, I'll have to leave it until tomorrow..

many thanks for your help, greatly appreciated.

Jammy Johnny, you are a mad celtic like myself. I'm in the northern Ireland celtic region, if it exists.

Got the rig going Ok. I had forgot that the machine was from another computer supplier. They had that little bit of hard disk space reserved for their own purposes. Well, I hope that was the case anyway. I deleted it with fdisk, and install was no problem.

Thanks for the help, and go to bed a little earlier in future.

Yes WD drives are different. With only one drive, NO JUMPERS
That means take the jumper completly off if your just using one drive.
I use WD's exclusively, and on my A7V600, I have all three drives without jumpers. the single on IDE0, and both the raid drives., same goes for my MSI
