My laptop runs an AMD Sempron 2600+ processor. Operating system is Windows XP Home edition, service pack 2.
I purchased a Maxtor 3200 external disk drive but on installation, a warning was displayed that the USB port was not operating at top speed. Data transfer seems to be at USB 1.1 speeds not the faster USB 2.0 capability.

I upgraded the drivers for the USB ports from the Microsoft support site but the Maxtor still does not recognise a USB 2.0 connection.
Has anyone experienced similar difficulties and found a solution?

probably a hardware issue. the hardware is usb 1 you have to get a USB 2.0 card and intall if you want to have maximum speed for your harddisk.
