I am looking at purchasing Giga-Bytes new k8nnxp-940 motherboard. The only wrinkle is that it supports ddr400 with the minimum for the amd64-fx processor. Will that memory speed also work for an opteron or would it is set at a max of ddr333 ?

The Opteron only supports DDR333. If you were to use DDR400 it would be downclocked to match the Opteron's requirements.
