The price cuts on almost all of AMD's processors yesterday (1st August) seem to have been a little deeper than they intended in one area!

The Opteron 100 series prices have rebounded today (2nd) with the launch of the socket 939 versions.

Model -July - 1Aug - 2Aug
144 - $178 - $163 - $125
146 - $218 - $178 - $183
148 - $278 - $218 - $263
150 - $417 - $278 - $367
152 - $637 - $417 - $799(!

Obviously, yesterday's price cut was a mistake but did they think that no-one would notice the big increase for the 152?

Well I personally hope, that this is an intermediate error. I guess that (as of today) these are prices for the S939 Opteron CPUs. The prices are matched to the corresponding Athlon64 CPUs. This is ok, as AMD is naturally aware, that in any other case all overclockers(i.e. people who know) will buy an Opteron 152 for $417, instead of an AthlonFX-55 for $799 ...
Hardware sites / magazines will soon cover that "save money by buying professional products" issue, so everybody will know /smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' />

So in my opinion, the cheap prices (of Aug, 1st) are the S940 Opterons 100, the new prices (Aug, 2nd) are valid for the new S939 socket Opterons 100, only.

But I honestly cannot prove that, it is up to AMD to clarify that issue.

Can I have a link showing that AMD launched 939 Opteron 1xx? I highly doubt that.
