Yep the -static can be used at the beginning without a problem, if you wanted to put it at the end in the Makefile you could use a variable like definining "$STATIC = -static" at the top of your makefile and then using that variable on the actually compilation line. Then just set "$STATIC =" when you don't want it to be static.
Or....have two seperate options, so you can "make static" or just "make"...
Just some thoughts!
