I am considering upgrading to a new system. I like the AMD64 CPU, but am concerned about future upgrading. My question is this -- If I purchased a single CPU Opteron MB and installed an Opteron (14X) 940 pin chip in it at this time, would I be able to upgrade to a new FX 939 pin chip at some future date? I like the idea of the extra bandwidth that I could get with an Opteron, but would like to have the option to move to the FX series in the future. Thanks for your opinions on this.
Socket 939 CPUs will NOT run on a Socket 940 mobo and vice versa. However, the current Socket 940 Athlon 64 FX-series will be continued atleast throughout this year, so i reckon you could get one of the cheaper, lower clocked 14x-Opterons and move to a Socket 940 A64 FX-51/53/55 when you feel like it(or can afford it).
