Hi, Got an Opteron 165 today.

My question is what needs to go between the chip and the heatsink. Nothign cam with the chip or the heatsink. I thought I need artic silver or something.

Theyre is a gray watch on the bottom of the heat sink is this the heat transfer stuff or am I missing somethign?

That is a thermal pad it will be sufficient if there is a plastic cover remove it before you install.

when you say a cover. There is plastic that cover the whole entire bottom of the chipset but that is it. Does not look like there is a cover on the therml pad istelf. Woud it helo at all to get artic silver?

Shoudl I clean the pad with alcholo before installing?

No, DO NOT CLEAN OFF THIS PAD. Remove the large plastic cover. The gray pad you see is a sticky substance. This is your thermal pad. Once your CPU is installed, place the heatsink on the CPU and latch it on per the instructions. That substance will spread and with use, will cook a bit until the appropriate thermal properties are obtained.

arctic silver is better if you wish to use it.
just be sure to clean the thermal pad off the heatsink.
isopropyl alcohol is good for that.

arctic silver has instructions at their web site too.
