I want to buy a pair of opteron 2000 series cpus from ncix, however, it says that it has only 1 year of manufacturer warranty. I thought it would be 3 years because I had a pair of 246 processors and they both had 3 years manufacturer warranties.

Retail Boxed (with fan) have 3 year warrenty
OEM WOF (no fan) have 1 year warrenty

www.insight.com carries the retail at a decent price.

Umm, no. WOF is about the only way you can get the newer ones, and straight from the horse's mouth, you get a 3 year warranty.

Can you post where to buy them with 3 year warrenty. Newegg lists them with 1 year warrenty.

newegg has the 2216 with fan.

Notice that I said "about." This is because AMD has two standards out there for LGA1207 when it comes to heatsink sizes. 3.5" and 4.1" 3.5" is what more motherboards support, but almost all aftermarket LGA1207 heatsinks are made for 4.1" spacing. And up until now, almost all LGA1207 retail packs have been WOF.

Many are having problems finding quiet and decent HSF for them. I stuck with 940 chipset Opterons. Less hassle.

When I was helping a friend here put together a new server, he decided to go LGA1207, and had that problem. Luckily both Tyan and Asus (the Tyan was DOA, so he sent it back and got an Asus) did see fit to include clips to use a standard 754/939/940 clip-on heatsink, but I am told that not all boards include these. So yeah, I'd tend to agree, there is an unnecessary amount of hassle with putting together an LGA1207 system.

I am disappointed that AMD would not have standardized the HSF for 1207. Gamepc.com has a HSF for the Tyan boards but they are noisy and $60 each.

Thanks folks. I decide to go with two 270s since I already have heatsinks for a pair of 246 which I am going to replace them. I don't have to get a new board and memory if I buy the socket 940 cpus.

Like you said, heatsinks for socket 1207 is difficult to find and my server is a 1U server so it will be even more difficult to get heatsinks for it. I don't think it makes much of a difference between socket 1207 and 940, maybe 5% or 10% performance difference. Hopefully the 270 does not generate more heat than the 246.
