I know this may have been asked a few times before, but I'd still like some opinions. I'm looking to buy either the Opteron 146 (939) or one of the Athlon64 3200+ processors (754 or 939).
Now some constraints I have (due to how much money my company will give me to spend and where I'm allowed to spend it):
1) Motherboard manufacturer has to be MSI, and must have Onboard video to reduce cost. I've narrowed down a few models for both 754 or 939 sockets.
2) Memory will be 2 x 512MB PC2700 non-ECC (would like PC3200, but from this particular supplier, has to be PC2700 as the PC3200 is ECC memory).
3) The Opteron is the cheapest CPU, the 754 the most expensive of the three, the cost difference between all three is not a big issue.
I'm looking for the best performing CPU, most likely will be running Red Hat AS, with a 1-2 VMware sessions. I was think going Athlon64 754 (due to the 1MB L2 cache), but then the Opteron and the 939 Athlon have dual channel memory controller, and I will be using 2 memory modules, so effectively the memory speed should be much faster on either of these than the 754 Athlon. Then the only difference between the 939 Athlon and the Opteron is the Opteron has 1MB L2, whereas the 939 Athlon has only 512k.
I'm not too fussed about overclocking, however will most likely overclock mildly.....
Having read review after review and checking our comments here and there, I'm somewhat confused...The Opteron is sounding the better option, would you agree ?
