I just bought the Tyan K8W dual processor Opteron with the new 250 chip. We got the system fully decked out to the max. I was amazed to find out that the Opteron chipset does not support USB 2.0. It can only handle USB 1.1. Now I know that I can easily go out and buy a 2.0 PCI card, but I am just amazed that AMD is that far behind in the I/O arena. The platform seems to be way ahead of the game everywhere else, but someone was asleep at the wheel in the USB department.

Come on guys, USB 2.0 is the standard these days and when you pay 5 grand for a workstation you don't expect to get a MB that has I/O that is several generations behind the times.

Hmmm....according to the appropriate Datasheet' ">http://www.amd.com/us-en/asset...nd_tech_docs/24674.pdf, the AMD 8000 series chipset or more appropriately the AMD 8111 I/O-hub DOES support six USB 2.0-ports.

I just had a look at the 8111's revision guide' ">http://www.amd.com/us-en/asset...nd_tech_docs/25720.PDF - seems like some versions don't support high-speed USB 2.0 traffic...full-speed USB 2.0(11Mbps) is basically USB 1.1, so that's why you only have USB 1.1-ports on your motherboard

At least they provide a 1394a port. Then again now we have to contend with getting a 1394b card. The good thing about the 1394b: many of them are 64-bit cards.
