I ve just ordered a mobo MSI K8T Master2 (dual opteron 246). I just wonder if the registered RAM is really necessary, even if I only use 2 slots with 2 x 512 Mb Corsair PC3700 XMS?
I ve read somewhere that the registered memory is really necessary when the 4 slots are used... is it true? Do I have to order ECC memory necessarily?

Opteron Processors have an integrated memory-controller, so it depends solely on your processor, NOT the motherboard what type of memory you can use.
ALL Opterons require registered memory - ECC is not mandatory, but nearly all registered DIMMs('sticks' of memory) also support ECC. You can usually enable or disable ECC in BIOS, tho
