I just bought a Opteron 170 (Boxed) I do VE and I am moving up from a 3.2C P IV. My question is did I move up? I know each core on the Opteron is 2 ghz does that mean when using a single core app I will only be running at 2 ghz instead of my old 3.2 ghz. I know AMD has their own numbering system for their CPU's speed ratings. I do not OC, but I might have to? I am looking for a stable system for Video Editing and will not be playing any games. Any thoughts?

CPU will go on a Asrock 939Dual-SATA2, I know its not the best board for OC, but I have a Matrox AGP duel head video card that I want to keep. I will also have 2 gigs of PC 3200 memory installed. When I move to a PCI X VC then I can or will upgrade the board depending on how it runs.

I think that Pentium 3.2GHz is still a better choise for multimedia orientiered machines.
But Opteron is completely unbeatable in game benchmark.
But finally i decided to bought the AMD processor and I think that it is a better solution.

Currently the AMD chips are beating almost everything intel has to offer, in all categories... and that opteron is a big step up from your old p4.
