States that this board supports the Opteron 852 processor. Can anybody shed any light on what bios version was used to perform this validation. Tyan support says they do not yet have a bios available which supports the 852.

We cannot get our K8QS Pro to post with 4 x Opteron 852 processors installed.

Perhaps this page should be amended as this is an expensive configuration which does not work at the moment.

The AMD-site says: "Bios: 02/22/2005 or later."
Compared to the Tyan site this has to be 02/23/2005 = 1.04b.

Nevertheless, I don't want to start guessing things I don't know.
Did you already flash the newest available BIOS revision? That would be my first try. (with an already compatible CPU of course)

We have tried 1.04b and the beta bios on the Tyan bios page. Neither work for us, and Tyan tech support has confirmed they don't for them either. They say a new bios may be available in 2 weeks.

So it looks like the Tyan page is right, but the AMD page is wrong. Perhaps AMD have been a little too eager to list the 852 as supported on the Thunder K8QS Pro, in light of the fact they have no other bare motherboard in the database which can run 852s.

We would have gone with 850s had we known bios support from Tyan would be so tardy.

The issue has to do with Ex stepping support. There isn't a BIOS available for the S4882 that supports Ex stepping processors yet. Tyan is working on resolving this and is currently qualifying a BIOS that should be available as a beta later this week.

All Opteron 852s are of the E4 stepping and Tyan has corrected their website to show that processor support for the S4882 is only up to opteron 850 CPUs. Note that you will have the same problems if you are using E4 stepping 850s though.

Keep an eye out on their website for a 1.05 beta. There 1.04d still doesn't support the 852 CPUs at this time.

The BIOS that you are looking for should be up by Friday of this week. It is purported to have the E4 stepping support that you require.

BIOS Flash Update...

The flash.bat file included in the BIOS update needs to be edited in order for it to flash. The line should read like the following.

phlash16 4882E100.rom /mode=3

Instead of reading
phlash16 4882E100.rom /i /c /s /mode=3

This change will probably be noted on Tyan's website today or monday. I found out the hard way.

Has anyone thoroughly tested the VE1.00 yet?

I'm not going to be placing any new orders with Tyan ever again. Between the neverending litany of problems, the utter lack of support, and the complete disaster that the 1.04b BIOS was[1] it's cheaper to overbuild to an Iwill H8505.
[1] I can't discuss the problems in detail - the details are under NDA from a 3rd Party.
