So basically I feel dumb went out and got myself a pretty new TYAN S2866A2NRF all happy to be trying socket 939 and the NVIDIA nForce4 Professional 2200 chipset and the SLI. Clearly I rushed through things too fast saw the board supported ECC and all the opty's I had read about previously suggested registered memory modules and I was looking to build a rock so I assumed... and we know what happens when one does that.... anyways I was going along happily have my new 4x 1gig Corsair XMS pc3200 registered ecc modules in hand all excited when much to my chagrin I notice a little comment in my mobo manual "DOES NOT SUPPORT REGISTERED MODULES"
Has anyone run one of these boards with registered modules and had it work?
Do the Opty's handle regular unbuffered non-ecc fine? granted might not be as stable as I had hoped but... unregistered ecc while AMD claims they did it to try and make it cheaper... its a specialty item and adds about another 250$ I dont have and its lower quality ram IMO...
(read If I could I'd much rather go with some nice "cheap" unbuffered non-ecc mushkin than some expeeeensive (much more than the chips I currently have) patriot unbuffered ecc)
Any help would be greatly appreciated oh how I cant wait to play with this box and this is just one of the kinks to work out enroute....
Socket 939 Opterons will NOT work with Buffered/Registered ram. Socket 939 Opterons WILL work with ECC unbuffered/unregistered ram. Socket 940 Opterons will NOT work with unbuffered/non-registered ram. Socket 940 Opterons WILL work with registered/buffered, non-ECC ram.
The reason for all of this is that the memory controllers in the 939 vs. the 940 chips are different. Period.
Hope that helps.
2 X 250 "E" Opterons, S2895 A2NRF (K8WE) beta bios 1.01T 4 X(2x 512MB Matched) Corsair 3200 Reg ECC(TWINX1024RE-3200LLPT) nVidia 6800GT, LSI 320-2X U320 Raid (512MB ram Onboard!!) 7 X 15,000 RPM U320 Drives, XP Pro SP2 PC Power & Cooling 850 SSI IT WORKS!!! AND IT'S TYAN'S TECH SUPPORT THAT DID IT!!!!
Thanks For The Help M8 the Board supports NonECC so I got an RMA for the registered ECC (15% restocking fee owww live and learn) and ordered up 4x 1gig Kingston HyperX sticks was looking forward to trying the registered ecc out but moving to a dual 940 system is still outside my budget at the moment.
