Well i just installed my 165 from an A64 3000+ and the first thing i noticed is that the retention bracket does not affix the heatsink quite as tight is this normal with the heat pipe cooler? The next thing i noticed is that the temperatures are quite a bit higher. I went ahead with my overclock anyway (278*9 @ 1.36 volts) and the system ran stable but it was running at 58 degrees celcius with prime running on both cores. At idle the cpu was running at 43 degrees. I am curious if this is normal. Just as an fyi i mounted the heatsink with the retention switch facing towards the expansion slots and used the correct amount of artic silver. Are my temps normal?

hopefully the grease will settle in and you can see some drop in temps... maybe in a day or two...

Hi Busboy,
i too just installed my opteon 165 today and its running fine with temps in the mid to high 30s as im running a different coooler, zalman 9500....but i set up 2 identical systems on the same day, one was mine and the other was my cousin's and he has the exact same configuration as mine but he is running hotter than mine both with the same cooler and same mobo with artic silver he's running 43 degree celcius on idle and im running 36-39 on idle but hopefully as functional-pc mentioned the temps will drop a degreee or 2 over the next few days.

in relation to your heatsink mounting, its the same no matter which direction the heatpipes are facing its the same, as i mounted my cousin's 165 heatsink with the heatpipes facing the PSU its still running 43 degree celcius on idle simliar to what u have with the heatsink mounted otherwise...

cheers..

Those temps seem on the high side to me. Your temps should not be approaching 60C at 1.36v. I have an Opteron 165 with a AC Freezer 64 pro and that sucker clipped on so tight I was afraid I was going to break something. I mean it is snug. Prior to overclocking my temps idled around 23-24C and now after overclocking they hover around 26-27. Of course I really didn't have to bump the voltage too much to get this 165 stable at 2.7Ghz. Only 1.42 but after running a stress test on both cores for 8 hours the temps never went above 39C. Maybe it's the case, maybe I'm lucky but I think a lot has to do with how snugly that AC Freezer is on the processor. I've read where other peoples are very tight like that, and yes it's on there correctly. You mentioned that yours didn't fit as snug as you think it should, that could definitely be your problem. My temps did drop about 5-6C the first few days as the thermal compound settled in.
