I am trying to upgrade an Asus A7A266 motherboard.

It supports an
AMD ATHLON XP 2600+ SOCKET A 266FSB THOROUGHBRED,
which I cannot find locally anymore, but I can find a
AMD ATHLON MP 2600+ SOCKET A 266FSB THOROUGHBRED.

Theoretically, would I be able to substitute one for the other?

Technically....yes.

In real life - who knows! I have MP's too and they work on some single boards but not on others. Sigh. No idea why.

Get the processor from someone with a return policy and find out. If it doesn't work, return it.

Also, I'd say keep searching for an XP. The MPs are usually more expensive for the same speed. You might be able to get a faster FX for the same dough.

Good luck.

Thanks. That's kind of what I thought. I've been able to find a 2200+ XP that will fit the bill. I wanted something faster, but I'm not to chance it on a more expensive processor. I may as well get a new mobo and memory then and set up something a little faster if I am going to spend some more $$. There's no point in getting stuck with a processor I can't use.
