I just bought a new AMD 2400+ processor. I read the instructions for both the motherboard and the processor itself. I noticed that in the instructions for the motherboard it mentions that I have to apply grease to the processor before attaching the fan. In the instructions for the processor there is no mention of any grease. Do I need the grease?

The reason for there being no metion of it is for open core processors(no heatspreader to cover the core), its recommended to use a thermal pad instead of thermal compound. Some thermal compounds are conductive and can short out the processor if it gets in the wrong places. It's not strictly needed to use some kind of thermal interface material, but it's still a good idea.
