Intel IA-32 architectures behave in a way such that a 32-bit write to a memory location that is aligned on a 32-bit boundary will be an atomic operation. I have not been able to confirm that this is also true on the AMD Athlon and AMD Opteron chips. Does anyone know if this is a safe assumption. Also, is there an AMD document that states this fact?
