I heard this word many times but yet not understood the actual use of benchmarking. Will anyone tell me its main use and types of benchmarking if any?
I have a computer with below configuration:

ASRock P4145Gx
P4 1.6 Ghz Processor
512Mb 133Mhz DDR
40 Gb Hdd
1 Optical drives. BenQ BW 1640 [DVDRW]

well benchmarking is for bragging rights (mine is faster that yours) and stability testing when we overclock. (everest and prime95 for stability also)
we use 3d mark 06 and 3d vantage-among other ones.
