Yes have used software raid 1 with Centos 4 and Centos 5. No problems with stability at all with centos which is just unbranded redhat. But software raid isn't really the same thing as hardware raid. Restoring from software raid isn't as simple as with the hardware raid.

Yes, I've used Linux md RAID1.

Absolutely.

@elderco:

It isn't hard to restore from software RAID1. When you put in a new disk to replace the failed one, add it to the array using mdadm and it will rebuild the array. It's pretty easy.
