I recently got a mini-ITX motherboard to use as a HTPC. The reviews for the board said it had awesome 720p/1080p rendering because of the onboard ATI Radeon HD 6310 graphics.

The reviewers must all have been running windows. I was hoping to use Linux for the HTPC so I could also use it for my torrent server and NAS. Currently I've settled with Linux Mint 11 (Ubuntu 11.04) and the fglrx driver from the repository. With this setup I'm getting lots of stuttering on 720p x264 and I get about 1 frame every second or two on 1080p x264.

Does anyone here use the proprietary driver or have the 6310? Is Linux a good choice as far as graphics go, I know it will fulfill my other needs perfectly? I am open to new distrbutions and am willing to try exparimental drivers.
