OK, if any of you are having problems with the long boot time with a blank screen in Xubuntu, Kubuntu, or Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), here's how to fix it...
sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf
And set both values to your monitor's default X and Y resolution (my laptop, for example is 1280x800, so the values would be 1280 and 800, respectively).
sudo dpkg-reconfigure usplash
It should fix the long boot time and now you should see a nice bootscreen! Please let me know if my instructions don't work.
