Hi there!

I am interested in buying an opteron and I am in the search for a mobo. I am thinking for one based on 780g, but it is a new one, so I am afraid of haveing any problems to install Slackware or/and Kubuntu (or any other distro)? I am not talking about the graphics, which I suppose will simply need the ati linux driver.

Thank you very much!

It should work just fine. The guys at Phoronix got the 790FX to work just fine on Linux, the 780G should work well too.

There are many 1000s of people working on the Linux kernel, so whenever new hardware comes out, it is usually supported pretty soon by the kernel.

I have a biostar ta780g m2+ mobo and I am having difficulty with the usb ports. Using the latest (2008-4) sidux (debian sid), the OS finds and recognizes my hp7260 printer but when I try to send a job to the printer, it disappears. It vanishes from the lsusb listing and sending a job results in "communications errors". One comment on the sidux forum suggested that the USB ports weren't supplying enough current.

UPDATE: I just built a computer for my parents with a Phenom II X4 920 on a Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2HP motherboard, which is a 780G northbridge/SB700 southbridge. I tested it with a Ubuntu 8.10 amd64 live CD and everything worked perfectly.
