After the upgrade to Ubuntu Hardy Heron, I figured I'd check glxgears to see the FPS my graphics card would crank out. It mostly fluctuated between 12,000's up into the 16,000's with the small default window size, and was in the mid 1,800's at full screen (22" wide screen). I'm wondering if there is a better (simple!) test for Ubuntu as this is not really a true benchmark. Anyone have any recommendations?

I have heard of something called "GL O.B.S." (GL Open Benchmark Suite) that is currently in beta stages. Not sure if its on Hardy's repos yet, though, but I will look.

This might be up your alley:

I'll have to give Phoronix a try as soon as I get some time.

Is GL O.B.S. out of alpha stage yet? I'm guessing that is even before beta.

Thanks for the suggestions vsingh and MU_Engineer, and if anyone has tried these, I'd be interested to know how it went.

Yeah, the most recent release (0.5) was released today. I'll give this a try too, but my laptop will probably be very slow for gfx benching...who knows.

EDIT: http://www.linuxplanet.com/linuxplanet/reports/6478

That's a nice tutorial for the Phoronix Suite. I'm playing around with it atm

How did it go for you vsingh? I got up to running the benchmark imagemagick, and then the monitor went to "out of range", and I had to reboot.

I did the graphics benching. This is how you do it:

1. cd to the directory you extracted the test suite into
2. command: sudo ./phoronix-test-suite install graphics (this will take time to dl)
3. command: sudo ./phoronix-test-suite run graphics

And then follow the easy step-by-step instructions. Worked on my old laptop, which has ATI radeon xpress 200m graphics

Thanks vsingh. Doom3 didn't work at all, but I finally got all of the Universe tests to run without too much trouble. I couldn't upload the results, and the folder it said the results would be saved to doesn't exist. But at least they all ran. Eh...Kind of feels like I've been chewing on a lemon right now. LOL
I did manage to write down the results as it ran though.

I wish they made a GUI for this, but then again, the CLI isn't that hard to use in this program. I just don't like how Doom 3 doesn't work, that is such a scary game I love it!!!!

Does anyone else have a problem with glxgears now? It reports the FPS every 5 seconds to the terminal, but the gears are frozen and do not move.

No problem here with Ubuntu 8.04. Are the FPS scores about what you would expect them to be?

Yes. I have been googling around and it seems to be an internal glxgears bug. Other 3D stuff works fine.
