Hi guys,

Currently I have a NAS server with an AM2+ mobo and an energy efficient Athlon X2 64.

I do a lot of live encoding on the system and my RAID configuration is software based so needs a powerful CPU and in some instances the current CPU isn't doing the job.

I'm planning to move to a quad-core AM3 Phenom II. There are 65w energy efficient models and 125w top end models. I am happy to use more power to gain more performance when encoding but don't wish to waste power when idle or simply playing mp3s from a network mount.

So my question is, do the 125w CPUs have a similarly low power consumption when in a near idle state in comparison to the 65w CPUs?

Many thanks for any advice
