My quad core has an AMD Phenom X4 9550, with the AM2+ socket. The mother board was made by Gateway, Model RS780. The AMD Chipset is a 780G. I use this desktop mainly for gaming, so I installed a NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT video card. Is there a faster processor available (the core speed is 2200MHz on this one, and the bus speed is 200MHz. A larger power draw would not be a problem because I installed a 850watt unit.

Normally the answer would be yes, that cpu socket can accept any of the 4 or 6 core Phenom II CPUs.

BUT!!! These things require BIOS updates so you'd NEED to search the gateway site for motherboard BIOS updates and/or phone them to get a REAL answer on compatibility.

OEM boards like that are usually stripped bare and don't have the voltage regulation to handle higher TDP CPU's. If a bios update is available you might want to consider sticking with a 925 or 945 or even a Athlon II X4, which will still out perform that 9550 and use less power doing it.
