So, I installed the X4 and reset bios. It hangs at "Verifying DMI pool .. " (error code 96). It is not recognizing the X4. I have a good bios (not the very latest, but a more recent tried and true). 4gigs OCZ (2 sticks) ram, 6400. I put the X2 back in, boots fine. I read that the 790 can take X4 before I bought, maybe wrong . .

Suggestions greatly appreciated

Does your particular board take that particular CPU? Do you have the latest BIOS... go to your board's website and find out.

The X4 975 is not listed in the CPU support table, if this is the board :

DFI LANPARTY UT 790FX-M2R processor support

Could try redo the Clear CMOS and make sure it really took, PSU disconnected from mains, take CMOS battery out.

BIOS files, etc.
