Topic Title: Disable one core in quad-core chip? Topic Summary: Need help on disabling a single defective core in a Phenom X4 9750 Created On: 08/15/2012 12:06 PM Status:

I have a PC running Windows Home Server 2011 (x64, Version 6.1, build 7601 SP1) off a Phenom X4 9750 Quad Code (HD9750WCJ4BGH). Lately I've been experiencing multiple BSODs, and have come to the conclusion that it is a CPU defect. Specifically, prime95 CPU test invariably crashes the machine, and at one instance I got a "FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4" off Worker #4. If I run prime95 with "Affinity" set (using task manager) to a single core, and the results confirm my suspicion - that it's a single core that is defective and the machine crashes every time I set affinity to that core and run prime95.
What I need to do is disable that specific core. No such option in BIOS, and the msconfig route allows me to select "Number of processors" though not disable a specific core. I realize that I will take a performance hit, but that is acceptable for this PCs role.
Can anyone help?
Thanks!
