I recently bought a Acer Aspite 5517 that came with Windows 7. But since my wife was unhappy with the performance, I have been forced to install Windows XP on the machine.

I have been able to find the XP drivers for all components except the display and the wireless adapter.

Of course, Acer used the easy and usual cop out saying that they will support only the OS the system was shipped with.

Here're the details of the two devices:

When I googled for the Video adapter, I was able to find a driver but when I try to install, it said that it was for a Catalyst and errored out saying that it was unable to find a Catalyst adapter.

I would appreciate if you can guide me.

That is one of the most annoying thing about Acer IMO, is their lack of willingness to support their customers!
Your issue is that the video adapter is an OEM piece. (Same for the LAN by the looks of it.)
That means that ATI sells a chip to Acer, they then modify it and build it to their specifications, that means that only Acer drivers will work for it.

I would suggest searching Acer's site and find an older system with the same video chipset that still supports XP and see if that driver will work for you.

Actually you can't really blame Acer Microsoft has officially discontinue updates (except Security) for Windows Xp.
Acer usually mess up their installation by bundling a lot of bloatware I suggest you to google how to install a clean bloatware free Windows 7 and activate it.
Window 7 is good except OEMs messed it up.
